On 23rd September, we rolled up our sleeves and took part in a litter pick in our local community, a small but powerful way to show our commitment to sustainability in action. Armed with our litter pickers, bin bags and enthusiasm, we cleared up waste and made a visible difference in our community. From crisp packets, energy drink cans to bottles of wine, it was shocking how much we found.

Littering harms wildlife and adds to pollution, with around 75% of people admitting they litter. Regular clean-ups can cut littering by up to 50%. After our efforts, Nescliffe's roads were much cleaner and safer, showing a commitment to sustainability for future generations. Our work improved the area's look and highlighted the need for ongoing care for the environment. We aim to spread the message that working together can lead to real change and a healthier planet.

Our litter pick was a huge success, with over 24kg of general rubbish collected, which is about the weight of a toddler. On our litter pick we found:

  • 1.22kg of aluminium equivalent to 70-80 cans.

  • 20 bottles of wine (which would take around one million years to decompose)

  • Three dog waste bags.

  • A Sony Walkman.

  • A plastic phone holder.

  • Nitrous oxide canisters.

  • Five empty runner gels.

  • Lots of food wrappers and packets.

It’s these everyday actions that reflect our values: environmental responsibility, collaboration and leading by example
