One of our company’s New Year’s sustainability resolutions was to complete our carbon footprint for 2024, something we do regularly for other companies as part of our consultancy services https://www.e4environment.co.uk/business-carbon-footprinting

We included Scopes 1, 2 and 3 in our calculations.  Not having a fleet of company vehicles or using gas means we have no emissions in Scope1 so our focus was on Scopes 2 and 3.

Scope 2 for our company just covers electricity usage in our offices.  Not having our own dedicated electricity bill meant that we needed to calculate average annual energy usage for individual items of equipment, also taking into consideration that a percentage of the electricity used is generated from solar panels.  Any electricity generated from renewables is not included in the carbon footprint calculations.

Scope 3 is always more detailed as it covers emissions from water supply to business travel to working from home.  Keeping good records of mileage, use of public transport and purchased goods and services is key to being able to accurately calculate Scope 3 emissions.   It can be daunting and time consuming to wade through each purchase made, whether it’s a ream of paper or the use of a bookkeeper, but it is important to include all of this data to gain an accurate carbon footprint calculation.

Overall, our carbon footprint came out at 7.2 tCO2e for 2024.  Our next step is to highlight where we can make improvements in order to reduce this figure.  Watch this space!
