National fitness day – Not just human health

marathon-530332_640National fitness day is to celebrate the role physical activity plays across the UK. Facilitated by ukactive, this year’s event took place on Wednesday 7th September 2016.

The aim of this day is to promote the most active day of the year. We know the benefit regular exercise delivers including a healthier heart, increased wellbeing and a better quality of life. However, many of us find getting fit troubling. It becomes a challenge and it shouldn’t be.

So what has this got to do with the environment? So a major anthropogenic factor which is damaging/ changing the world we live in, is the burning of fossil fuels. One of the main sources of this being from motor vehicles, so here’s an idea – what’s stopping people using the car less and walking or cycling, or driving less miles and walking the rest?

 

 

Coinciding human and environmental issues has many benefits – we can look at this in what is good for the environment is good for human health/lifestyle too!

  • Cleaner air – Less greenhouse gases in the atmosphere causing global warming, but also less dust and carbon monoxide for humans to breathe in.
  • Economic – Whilst driving less, releases less emissions, you will also save money in less fuel expenditure or paying to park.
  • Quicker than being sat in traffic – rush hour. Everyone’s in their cars – be that annoying person that beats the traffic running/walking past the gridlock!

So happy national fitness day everyone! Get active and protect our environment at the same time.
